How to save on energy

Some energy advice for residents

Energy bills have been steadily rising in the UK, putting pressure on families to heat their homes.

It has been a tough time for many, especially through the cold winter months, as people struggle to cover the costs of gas and electricity.

At Block Management UK, we understand the impact energy prices can have on our residents so we work hard to negotiate the best rates for energy across our portfolio of properties, reducing the cost in the communal areas we manage.

Some of our residents have approached our team to ask how they can save money on energy themselves.

Here, Tom Mortimer, Compliance and Planning Manager at Block Management UK, looks at some of the ways savings could be made.

When to use energy

Taking advantage of off-peak energy is a good way of slimming down your energy bill.

Times will vary among energy providers but generally, energy is cheapest when demand is at its lowest – usually between 10pm and 8am.

Peak times tend to be between 7am and 10am in the morning, and then 6pm to 8pm in the evening, so it is best to avoid running any high energy items during these periods.

Home savings

Small changes in how you use electrical items can save you even more money from your energy bill. These include not charging mobile phones when they are already at full power, turning lights off when you leave a room and avoiding overfilling your kettle when you make a cuppa.

If you have a washing machine, try only running a cycle when full or wash clothes at a lower temperature where possible.

Consider swapping baths with showers to be more energy efficient and think about draught proofing your doors and windows.

A few little changes can go a long way in reducing your use of energy, and therefore saving money on your bills.
